Hybrid ceramic surface, SEM
Hybrid ceramic surface, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This surface is a hybrid material that combines alumina (a form of aluminum oxide) and the polymer polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The structure seen here was designed to mimic that seen in a naturally tough material, mother-of-pearl, with a scaffold-like structure reinforcing the material internally. This work, published in 2008, was carried out at the Materials Sciences Division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California, USA.
